How to Get Started with Internet Marketing

Right now many people are looking for ways to supplement their income or they are looking for a job that is not going to be affected by the current economic situation. Many are looking to the web and are starting internet marketing businesses. Most people jump right in when they read the claims that internet marketing is going to make them rich. Why then do so many internet marketers fail? The answer is simple; they don’t know how to work internet marketing.

Let’s first address why so many people jump on the internet marketing bandwagon. There are a number of reasons including but not limited to:

  • Anyone can do it.
  • Easy to get started.
  • Little to no start up costs.
  • Little overhead.
  • Flexible schedule.
  • Promises of financial freedom.

Now, each and every one of those reasons are valid. The reason so many people fail at internet marketing is because they don’t take the time to learn what internet marketing really is. They also don’t put in the work to earn the financial freedom. Internet marketing is not a scam, there is a lot of money to be made if you know what you are doing.

The first step is to educate yourself on what internet marketing is. Simply put, internet marketing is the marketing of a product and or service over the internet. Understand that it is marketing, you have to “sell” the product or service you have, nothing, no matter how amazing, sells itself. This takes work, McDonalds did not sell a bazillion burgers without marketing and advertising.

Second, you need to decide on a product or service that you are knowledgeable about and ideally one that you are going to use. There are two reasons for this, first how can you market something you are clueless about? When some asks you why they should buy your product or use your service you have to be able to answer them intelligently. If you use the product or service yourself then you will have a better understanding of that product and how it works and how it can help your potential customer.

If you are not representing a product or service that you would use… why would anyone else? Thirdly, and this is a biggie, understand that competition is a good thing. All too often new internet marketers get it in their head that in order to be successful they have to have a product or service that no one else has. While this can be advantageous if there is a demand for this new product… but if there isn’t then what good is it going to do for you?

Think about it, there are 50 different kinds of shampoo in the shampoo aisle… there are 12 different kinds of toilet paper… more than one burger joint in town. There are options because there is a demand. What you have to do is find a product that you are comfortable with and understand how it is different and better than the competition. You want there to already be a demand for what you have to offer, it makes the process much easier.
